What to know

Downspouts direct roof runoff away from the gutter system. Their number and placement depend on roof area, gutter capacity, roof geometry, and the safe discharge route.

Before requesting a quote

Ask where water will exit, whether extensions or other drainage work are needed, and whether runoff could affect walkways, neighboring property, or the foundation.

Follow the water beyond the gutter

A downspout needs a route from the outlet to a safe discharge point. Discuss walkways, landscaping, neighboring property and the foundation rather than allowing water to collect at the base of the wall.

Placement depends on the roof

Roof geometry, contributing roof area, gutter dimensions and the proposed discharge route all affect placement. Ask the contractor to explain the layout for your building instead of applying a generic downspout count.

Clarify separate drainage work

Extensions, splash blocks, buried drainage and grading may be separate scopes. Get written confirmation of what the gutter installer will provide and who handles any additional work.
